Abstract

STUDY OF THE EFFECT OF CHANGES IN THE EVALUATION METHOD OF COGNITIVE AREA (SUBJECT BASED) AND NONCOGNITIVE AREA (COURTICULAR ACTIVITIES) ON THE PERSONALITY AND ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT OF STUDENTS

Abstract

Presently the prevailing education system is focused on the teachers to achieve good results in the examinations. Thus examinations make the process of education more effective, it is a matter of concern for the stakeholders. Periodic evaluation of educational institutions, teachers and students is essential to maintain the purity and quality of education. Several committees and commissions were set up from time to time to suggest improvements in education in general and evaluation systems in examinations in particular. Many institutes have made innovative efforts to improve the quality and efficiency in various processes of their examination systems especially in the conduct, administration and evaluation. In spite of all these efforts, some problems related to the examination system like examinations dominating the educational process, passing examinations has become more important than getting education, memorization examinations encourage selective study due to stereotypical questions. Marks obtained in examinations is not a reliable and valid measure of a student's performance. In the examination to be conducted in any subject in three hours, the evaluation of the subject taught by the student throughout the year is not justified and relevant. Evaluation is not just a measure of the achievement of the students, but it is an attempt to measure the various objectives of the curriculum on a broader scale. Evaluation has been considered an integral part of teaching-learning. Through this, quality can be brought in education. Therefore, efforts are being made to link continuous and holistic assessment with classroom activities. The present research has been focused on these points, how successful is continuous and holistic evaluation in the classrooms and what is its effect on the personality and academic achievement of the students. According to the research findings, continuous and holistic evaluation has a significant impact on the achievement level of the students. Continuous and holistic evaluation of non-cognitive area (co-curricular activities) increases the achievement level of the students.
