Abstract

Affordable and clean energy is fundamental to economic development, social welfare, environmental sustainability, and long-term human progress. Recognizing these facts, the United Nations adopted Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG 7), which seeks to ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all by 2030 (United Nations, 2015). For developing economies, achieving SDG 7 is especially challenging because energy demand continues to rise alongside industrialization, urbanization, and population growth. India provides one of the most significant contemporary examples of this challenge.
