Abstract
Diplomatic relations between the United States and Bulgaria were formally initiated in 1901, when the United States appointed its first diplomatic representative to Bulgaria. In the early years, American representatives focused largely on protecting and promoting commercial interests, as trade between the two countries was gradually expanding. This phase of relations reached an important milestone in 1909, when the United States officially recognized Bulgaria’s independence.
